Rowes Bay Golf Club

PROJECT: Dam restoration
ASK: $45,000
STATUS: Funding required

Imagine playing golf with the Pacific Ocean on one side and a conservation park on the other.

But Rowes Bay Golf Club, situated just 10 minutes from the Townsville CBD, is more than just a pretty golf course. It has strong links with its community, both local and in the broader sense.

It has membership categories for players who work in the mining sector, as well as for members of the Australian Defence Force. It provides its facilities to Townsville Grammar for golf tuition. And it hosts a busy calendar of charity days for causes such as Camp Quality, Ronald McDonald House, Golden Octopus Foundation and others.

It needs a course in good nick to do this.  But water in the holding pond has developed a high silt level leading to weed overgrowth which then clogs the irrigation pipes so necessary for quality course condition. Since the devastating floods early in 2019, the pond has been further severely compromised by Salvinia, requiring the installation of two aerators to protect the pond’s fish.

Excavating the holding pond and cleaning it out thoroughly is vital to protect the environmental integrity of this area. As general manager Gary Toplis said: “This project is key to our sustainability and allows us to be a great social and recreational hub for the community.”

“This project is key to our sustainability and allows us to be a great social and recreational hub for the community.”

KEY POINTS:

  • Rowes Bay has strong links with its community and charitable causes
  • A dam restoration is needed to maintain the quality of the playing surface. High silt levels have encouraged an overgrowth of weeds, clogging the irrigation system
  • A course in good condition serves the needs of its members and its community and encourages others to use it
  • The project is of manageable cost and a short time frame, well worth the ensuing result
